Cambridge Girls Chess Workshop
40 girls participated in the Girls Chess Workshop on Sunday 10th January. The event was organised by Dr Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni and took place in St Faith's School Cambridge. Dagne Ciuksyte IM, Rita Atkins WIM, Nicholas Jackson and Jamie Mitchell provided the coaching. We were incredibly impressed by how focused and engaged the children were! We hope to see them all again for a second workshop sometime in May.
The initiative is funded by a small donation from Trinity, St. Johns and Sidney Sussex colleges. The aim is to create opportunities for girls to play chess as girls are generally outnumbered by boys in all chess clubs and chess tournaments. The workshop is a friendly venue for them to learn more about chess and to get together and play. By no means does this suggest that girls do not enjoy playing chess with boys (and winning!!!); we hope they will use what they learn through the workshops and other events to do just that!
